$

Sales minus returns and discounts. With or without taxes, but always on the same basis.

editable reference

Sales transactions, not customers: someone who buys three times counts as three orders.

editable reference
units

For units per order and average price per unit. Leave at 0 if you do not have it.

Average order value

$2,500

What each transaction brings in, on average, in the period.

Units per order

2.5

How many units each transaction includes.

Average price per unit

$1,000

Revenue divided by units sold.

Scenario with a higher order value

What happens if each transaction brings in more and the number of orders stays the same.

editable reference
%

With the same number of orders.

With a 10% higher order value ($2,750) and the same 2,000 orders, revenue for the period goes up by $500,000 to $5,500,000.

Result, scenario, assumptions and formula in one PDF. The calculation on screen is free and needs no sign-up.

How do we calculate this?
average order value = net revenue / number of orders
units per order = units sold / number of orders
price per unit = net revenue / units sold
scenario = average order value x (1 + increase) x number of orders

About this tool

How to read average order value

Average order value sums up in one number what each purchase is worth. To be useful, it has to be measured the same way every time and read together with units.

What goes above and below the line

On top goes revenue for the period, ideally net of returns and discounts. Below goes the number of transactions, not customers or units: one customer who buys three times counts as three orders.

The other basis to fix is taxes. Measuring one month with taxes and the next without them moves the order value when nothing has changed.

Order value, units and price: separating the causes

A rising order value can be good news or just inflation. Units per order and average price per unit separate the two causes: if units hold steady and price goes up, customers are not buying more.

That is why the calculator asks for units as optional data: without them you get the order value; with them you see where it comes from.

From a one-off number to tracking

Order value becomes useful when it is tracked by channel, branch or salesperson, week by week. Metrix brings sales, orders and units together and shows it without building the spreadsheet by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How is average order value calculated?

Divide net revenue for the period by the number of orders, that is, sales transactions. With 5,000,000 across 2,000 transactions, the average order value is 2,500. The full explanation is in the average order value glossary entry.

Is average order value measured with or without taxes?

Either works as long as the basis stays the same in every report. The usual choice is net revenue without taxes: comparing an order value with taxes against one without them distorts the analysis.

What is the difference between order value and units per order?

Order value measures how much each transaction brings in; units per order, how many products it includes. Reading them together tells you whether order value rises because customers buy more or because each unit costs more.

How do you raise average order value?

With cross-selling, bundles, premium versions and free-shipping thresholds. It is the lever that makes the most of existing traffic, along with the number of customers and purchase frequency.
