Integrate ShipStation with AI agentsthat tell customers where their order is
Vantegrate's AI agents connect to your ShipStation account through the official API v2: they look up the shipment by order number, read the carrier's tracking and answer the customer on WhatsApp or SMS. When ShipStation reports a status change by webhook, the agent tells the customer before they ask.
How the data flows
What does it mean to integrate ShipStation with Vantegrate's AI agents?
Integrating ShipStation with Vantegrate's AI agents means that "where is my order?" gets answered by an agent on WhatsApp or SMS, using the tracking ShipStation receives from each carrier. The agent connects through the API v2, looks up the shipment by order number and listens for tracking webhooks to send each update without anyone asking.
That's different from sending the carrier's link and waiting. The agent knows whether the order hasn't shipped yet, is in transit, had a delivery attempt or hit an exception, and it logs every conversation in your CRM. Your orders, labels and carriers stay in ShipStation: the agent reads them and doesn't copy them anywhere else.

What data moves between Vantegrate and your ShipStation account
The agent works with the standard resources of the API v2: the shipment created from each order, the label bought from the carrier and the tracking events that arrive by webhook, with no manual entry.
The order, looked up by its number
Sellium looks up the shipment by the order number the customer gives, the same one that comes from your store or marketplace, and sees whether it's still pending, already has a label or was canceled. That tells it which order status to share.
Each carrier's tracking
With the label, the agent reads the status the carrier reports: accepted, in transit, delivery attempt, exception, delivered or delivered to a pickup location, with the estimated delivery date and the tracking link.
Every change, reported by webhook
ShipStation sends the track_event_v2 event whenever the carrier reports something new. The agent verifies the signature on each notification and decides whether to message the customer, for example after an exception or a failed delivery attempt.
How the integration works, step by step
Vantegrate handles the setup and rollout. Your team authorizes, validates and starts using it.
The API v2 key
ShipStation includes the API in its Standard and Premium plans, not in Free or Starter. Your team generates the v2 key in the API settings and we store it in a vault: ShipStation warns that the key gives full access to the account and should be guarded like a password.
Rules for what the agent does
Since the key opens the whole account, the limits come from the agent's rules: what it looks up, whether it can put a shipment on hold, whether it creates return labels and which cases go to a person. We define them with your team during discovery.
Signed tracking webhooks
We create the track_event_v2 subscription through the API (v2 events can only be created that way), and the endpoint that receives them validates the RSA-SHA256 signature with ShipStation's public key. Each notification is acknowledged within the 10 seconds ShipStation allows.
Testing with real orders
For platform accounts, ShipStation doesn't offer a sandbox: everything runs in production. We test with a few real orders and, if a test label is needed, it's voided right away, as ShipStation recommends.
"Where is my order?" on WhatsApp or SMS, with ShipStation tracking
ShipStation already goes after that question: its tracking page talks about cutting "where is my order?" (WISMO) calls (ShipStation). To keep buyers posted it uses branded emails and its own tracking page (ShipStation); for SMS, its blog suggests mirroring those updates through an integration (ShipStation).
The agent adds the channel where customers already ask. When someone messages on WhatsApp or texts with their order number, Sellium looks up the shipment and answers with the real status: whether it has a label yet, what stage it's in, the estimated date and the tracking link. If the package hit an exception, it doesn't improvise an answer: it opens a case for your team with the full context. How order status gets answered from your systems is covered in WhatsApp connected to your ERP.
Letting customers know before they ask is the other half. With tracking webhooks, Trazzo sends a proactive update at each stage: shipped, delivery attempt, exception or delivered. See how the last-mile agent handles those updates in Trazzo.
| Dimension | Without an agent | Agent connected to ShipStation |
|---|---|---|
| Customer question | Someone searches the dashboard or the carrier's site | The agent looks up the shipment by order number and answers |
| Channel | Email and tracking page | Also WhatsApp and SMS, in the same conversation |
| Delivery exception | Found when the customer complains | The webhook flags it and the case goes to your team |
| Order not shipped yet | A generic answer | The real status: pending, labeled or canceled |
| Record | Stays in the inbox of whoever answered | Every conversation, in your CRM |
Comparison of integration patterns; the exact scope is defined with your team based on your ShipStation plan and operation.
Shipment holds and returns from the conversation
Some questions call for an action, not just an answer. If the customer says they won't be home or wants to change something before the order ships, the agent can put the shipment on hold until a date: while it's on hold, no label can be bought, and on that date it goes back to pending on its own (ShipStation). A shipment that already has a label can't be put on hold, so that case goes to your team.
For returns, the API v2 creates a return label from the original label and swaps the ship-to and ship-from addresses automatically (ShipStation). Every label has a cost, so during discovery we decide whether the agent creates it, under which conditions, or only takes the request and hands it to your team. Your reverse logistics process stays yours.
Changing a shipment's address is also possible through the API, but ShipStation advises care: a bad edit, such as leaving the shipment without items, can block the update to the marketplace when the label is created (ShipStation). That's why the action starts on your team's side and is enabled only once we've validated it together.
Actions, on your terms: the API key opens the whole account, so the scope is set by the agent's rules: what it looks up, what it can change in ShipStation and what always goes through a person.
ShipStation API v1, API v2 and its MCP server
ShipStation belongs to ShipStation Global, the company formed by the merger of Auctane and WWEX Group (ShipStation Global), and it has two versions of its API. V1 is the legacy one: it uses a key and a secret, allows 40 requests per minute (ShipStation) and ShipStation says it will be removed (ShipStation). V2 uses a single key in the API-Key header, allows 200 requests per minute (ShipStation) and adds batch labels, return labels and manifests.
Vantegrate connects through v2. ShipStation also publishes an MCP server, but it's for documentation: it helps an AI assistant explore the API while someone writes code, and it doesn't operate your account (ShipStation). Its own AI, which it calls Intelligence, works inside the platform on rates, automations and delivery performance (ShipStation). The Vantegrate agent works somewhere else: the conversation with your customer.
If you use ShipStation API, the developer product formerly called ShipEngine, instead of the platform, the same key works for v2, and that product does have a sandbox, with keys that start with TEST_ (ShipStation).

An agent connected to your ShipStation vs. a standalone tool
| Standalone AI tool | Agent connected to your ShipStation | |
|---|---|---|
| Data source | A copy that drifts | Tracking, checked live in ShipStation |
| Where your data lives | In a third-party system | Shipments in ShipStation, conversations in your CRM |
| Result of each question | Stuck in another app | An answer in the chat, logged in your CRM |
| Permissions and audit | Broad and hard to audit | Actions limited by rules and logged |
| Reaching production | Often stalls as a pilot | Validated, phased rollout |
Why connect an agent to your ShipStation account
Third-party figures, each with its published source, to size the platform, customer service and the channel. None of them is a Vantegrate result.
200+
Parcel carriers ShipStation connects to, plus more than 50 less-than-truckload (LTL) freight carriers
20.3%

The carrier figure is the one ShipStation publishes about its own platform. Chatarmin measures 131 shops on its platform, with 2.9 million resolved tickets, and notes the sample isn't representative of e-commerce as a whole. Pew measures US adults who say they use WhatsApp, which is why the agent handles both WhatsApp and SMS.

Explore TrazzoThe integration doesn't take your shipments anywhere
The principle is simple: AI comes to your data, not your data to the AI. The agent reads your ShipStation account through the official API, and your orders, labels and carriers stay there.
- Connection through the API v2 over HTTPS with TLS 1.2 or higher, which ShipStation requires for every call (ShipStation).
- The key opens the whole account: it's stored in a vault, as ShipStation advises, and your team can deactivate it from the API settings if anything looks off (ShipStation).
- Every webhook arrives signed with RSA-SHA256, and the agent uses ShipStation's public key to verify that the notification is authentic and recent.
- Actions that change something in ShipStation, such as putting a shipment on hold or creating a return label, are limited by rules and logged one by one.
- The agents run on Salesforce or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, whose SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications belong to those platforms, not to Vantegrate or ShipStation.
Frequently asked questions about the ShipStation integration
What operations and customer service teams usually ask before connecting an AI agent to their ShipStation shipments.
How does the agent tell customers where a ShipStation order is?
How does the agent tell customers where a ShipStation order is?
Through the API v2: the customer writes on WhatsApp or SMS with their order number, the agent looks up the shipment in ShipStation and, if it already has a label, reads the carrier's tracking with the estimated date and the tracking link. If the order hasn't shipped, it says so; if there's an exception, it hands the case to your team. Learn about the sales agent in Sellium.
Which ShipStation plan do I need to connect the agent?
Which ShipStation plan do I need to connect the agent?
One with API access: Standard or Premium. According to ShipStation's documentation, the Free and Starter plans don't include the API (ShipStation). If you use ShipStation API, the developer product formerly called ShipEngine, that product's key also works for v2.
Can the agent send WhatsApp updates to US customers?
Can the agent send WhatsApp updates to US customers?
Yes, with utility templates: a shipping update with the order number, tracking number and estimated date is one of the examples Meta gives for that category (Meta). What doesn't reach US numbers is marketing templates (Meta), and an update with a coupon becomes marketing. For customers who don't use WhatsApp, the same update goes out by SMS, with the A2P 10DLC registration required to text from a local US number (Twilio).
Can the agent change anything in my ShipStation account?
Can the agent change anything in my ShipStation account?
Only what's defined during discovery. The API key gives full access to the account (ShipStation), so the limits come from the agent's rules: for example, putting a shipment on hold until a date or creating a return label, and nothing else. Actions on shipments that come from a marketplace are tested with your team first, as ShipStation recommends.
