Best intelligent document processing software:which one fits your case

Intelligent document processing (IDP) uses AI to read invoices, purchase orders, contracts and forms and pull out their data without manual entry. This guide describes the best-known platforms neutrally, adds what Gartner's Magic Quadrant shows and helps you choose by use case.

The short answer

Which intelligent document processing software should you choose?

It depends on who will run it and what your documents look like. Enterprise platforms such as ABBYY, Hyperscience or Tungsten Automation pay off with volume and a team to administer them; UiPath fits if you already automate with its robots; the cloud APIs from Microsoft, AWS or Google, if you have developers to build the solution; Rossum, which became part of Coupa, if your focus is accounts payable; and Arconte, if you want a turnkey agent that runs inside your Salesforce or Oracle environment and handles documents in Spanish.

Gartner evaluates the category in its Magic Quadrant for Intelligent Document Processing. The first edition covered 18 vendors, including AWS, Google and Microsoft; the second covered 15, without those three clouds and with Rossum listed under Coupa. Arconte is not in the Magic Quadrant: it is a regional agent, not a global platform, and we would rather say so up front.

Five criteria decide the rest: accuracy on your real documents, languages and formats, the delivery model (platform, suite module, API or turnkey), integration with your ERP and who works the exceptions. With those five clear, the list sorts itself for your case.

Criteria

  • Measurable accuracy on real documents, not on the demo set.
  • Languages and formats: performance on the document types and languages you actually receive, Spanish included.
  • Delivery model: platform, module of an automation suite, API to build on or turnkey agent.
  • Integration with the ERP, CRM and workflow where the data is used, and who handles the exceptions.

The options

The best-known platforms, described neutrally

The head terms of IDP belong to a handful of global platforms and the big clouds. This is a neutral read of what each one is and when it fits, plus the lane where a regional option belongs.

ABBYY

Enterprise IDP platform · large organizations

One of the long-standing names in document recognition. Its Vantage platform is low-code, ships pre-trained skills for more than 150 use cases and deploys in the cloud or on your own infrastructure. ABBYY announced that Gartner named it a Leader in both editions of its Magic Quadrant for IDP.

When it fits: large organizations that want an established IDP platform with broad document coverage and deployments at scale.

Hyperscience

Enterprise IDP platform · regulated industries and government

Its Hypercell platform is built to process, at scale, the wide variety of documents that flow through large organizations, and its customers include U.S. federal agencies such as the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Hyperscience announced that Gartner named it a Leader in both editions of the Magic Quadrant.

When it fits: large enterprises and public agencies with high document volumes and strict accuracy and audit requirements.

Tungsten Automation

Capture and workflow automation · large enterprises

The company formerly known as Kofax. Its TotalAgility platform combines document capture and processing with workflow automation, and Tungsten announced that Gartner named it a Leader in both editions of the Magic Quadrant for IDP.

When it fits: enterprises that want document processing and the workflow around it from one vendor, often teams that already ran Kofax software.

UiPath

IDP inside an automation suite · companies with RPA

Its document offering, UiPath IXP, combines Document Understanding for invoices and forms with generative extraction for contracts and reports, and feeds the robots and agents on the UiPath Platform. UiPath announced it was named a Leader in the first edition of Gartner's Magic Quadrant.

When it fits: companies that already automate processes with UiPath and want document extraction inside those same workflows.

Rossum (Coupa)

IDP for accounts payable · high invoice volumes

IDP platform for transactional documents (invoices, purchase orders, delivery notes) built on its own language model, which the company says supports 276 languages and handwriting. Coupa acquired Rossum: the two had worked together since 2024, and Coupa said it will extend Rossum's technology across its spend management platform.

When it fits: companies with heavy accounts payable volume, especially those already on Coupa or evaluating it. If you are not on Coupa, ask how the standalone offering will evolve before signing a long contract.

Microsoft Azure Document Intelligence

Cloud extraction API · development teams on Azure

Microsoft's machine-learning OCR and document processing service. It extracts text, tables and key fields, with prebuilt models for invoices, receipts, IDs, bank statements and U.S. tax and mortgage forms, plus custom models for everything else. It is infrastructure your team assembles into a solution.

When it fits: engineering teams already on Azure that want to build their own extraction with ready-made models for common documents.

Amazon Textract and Bedrock Data Automation

Cloud extraction API · development teams on AWS

Textract extracts printed text, handwriting, layout elements and data from scanned documents; Bedrock Data Automation adds generative AI to turn documents, images, audio and video into structured insights for your applications. Both are building blocks for your developers.

When it fits: teams that already build on AWS and want document extraction as one more service in their stack.

Google Document AI

Cloud extraction API · development teams on Google Cloud

Google Cloud platform that turns unstructured documents into structured data through processors: general parsers, custom extractors and generative AI models on Vertex AI. As with the other APIs, your team builds the solution.

When it fits: technical teams that want to compose their own extraction on APIs and already run on Google Cloud.

Arconte (Vantegrate)

Turnkey IDP agent · Spanish-language documents

Spanish-language documents · turnkey

Vantegrate's AI agent that reads invoices, delivery notes, purchase orders and contracts without templates, validates each field against your own data and sends to a review queue only what it cannot confirm. It is delivered configured for your document types, runs in your Salesforce or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environment and connects to your ERP.

When it fits: companies on Salesforce or Oracle that want a turnkey agent, especially US companies with suppliers, customers or subsidiaries in Latin America that receive documents in Spanish with local tax fields.

The descriptions are based on each vendor's public information and aim to be neutral; the order is not a ranking. Magic Quadrant placements are as announced by each company, and Gartner does not endorse any vendor in its research. Vantegrate develops Arconte, one of its AI agents, and includes it with the same structure, positioned by its niche and not presented as better at everything.

How to choose

Five criteria for choosing IDP software

The best document processing software is the one that performs on your real documents. Review these five criteria before you book demos.

1

Accuracy on your documents

An analyst quadrant helps you build a shortlist, but it does not measure your paperwork. Ask for a pilot with your own documents, the hard ones included: what matters is how many fields come out right without human touch across your real mix of suppliers and formats.

2

Languages and formats

The leading platforms support many languages, but performance varies by document type. If you receive invoices in Spanish from Latin American suppliers or subsidiaries, test that specifically: it is where a regional option can make a difference.

3

Classic OCR vs. template-free IDP

If your suppliers change their layouts often, a solution built on fixed templates breaks and you are back to manual entry. AI-based IDP understands the structure and adapts; check that the tool does not depend on rigid templates.

4

API vs. turnkey

Some options are APIs for your team to build and maintain the solution; others arrive configured for your formats. Be honest about your engineering capacity: a powerful API with nobody to integrate it does not solve the problem.

5

Integration and exceptions

Extracting data is only half the job: it has to reach your ERP without double entry, and someone has to resolve what the AI could not confirm. Look at how the output connects to your systems and how the exceptions queue is worked day to day.

Where Arconte fits: not in place of a global platform. Arconte is not in Gartner's Magic Quadrant and does not compete with ABBYY or UiPath on breadth. It makes sense when you process documents in Spanish with local tax fields, you want a turnkey solution and the data has to stay in your Salesforce or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environment (how we protect it). If that is your case, compare it head to head.

Why it matters

The numbers behind the category

Whichever tool you choose, these four figures explain why the category grew so fast.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about intelligent document processing

What operations and finance teams usually ask before choosing IDP software.

What is the best intelligent document processing software?

It depends on your case. For large organizations with broad needs, established platforms such as ABBYY, Hyperscience or Tungsten Automation; if you already automate with robots, UiPath's document module; if you have engineers to build, the APIs from Microsoft, AWS or Google; if your focus is accounts payable on Coupa, Rossum. If you want a turnkey agent inside Salesforce or Oracle, or you receive many documents in Spanish, that is where Arconte comes in. The right choice comes from measuring accuracy on your own documents.

What does Gartner's Magic Quadrant say about IDP?

Gartner published its first Magic Quadrant for Intelligent Document Processing with 18 vendors and a second edition with 15, in a market its summary puts at more than 100 vendors. ABBYY, Hyperscience, Infrrd and Tungsten Automation announced they were named Leaders in both. It is a good shortlist of global platforms, but it does not measure performance on your documents: you still have to run that test.

What does Coupa's acquisition of Rossum change?

Coupa, the spend management platform, acquired Rossum to extend its IDP technology across its whole platform, beyond accounts payable; the two companies had worked together since 2024. If you already use Coupa, the integration becomes more direct. If you do not, ask how the standalone offering will evolve and what its roadmap is before signing a long contract.

What is the difference between OCR and IDP?

OCR turns an image into text: it recognizes characters but does not understand what they mean. IDP (intelligent document processing) adds AI to interpret the structure and pull the right fields: it knows which number is the invoice number, the total or the tax ID, even when the layout changes. Classic OCR usually depends on templates; IDP adapts.

Can these tools read documents in Spanish?

Most can, and it is worth testing with your own documents. The leading platforms support many languages (Rossum, for example, says its model covers 276), but accuracy on Latin American invoices, with local tax fields and formats, can differ between a demo and your operation. Arconte is built specifically for Spanish-language documents and the region's formats, which is its lane in a category led by global platforms.

How accurate is AI data extraction?

It varies with the document type, its quality and how well the solution is trained on your formats. That is why the only measurement that counts is on your own documents, the hard cases included. Be wary of accuracy figures presented without saying which documents they were measured on; ask for a pilot with your real paperwork before deciding.

Should you use an API or a turnkey solution?

It is a build-or-buy decision. An API such as Azure Document Intelligence, Amazon Textract or Google Document AI gives you full control, but it needs an engineering team to integrate and maintain it. A turnkey solution such as Arconte arrives configured for your document types and connected to your systems, in exchange for less low-level customization. If your engineering team is stretched or the project is not core to your business, turnkey usually gets to results sooner.
