Meta Business Agent or a custom AI agent:which one fits for selling on WhatsApp

Meta has its own AI agent for WhatsApp, and for many businesses it is enough. This guide compares them criterion by criterion: where Meta's agent does the job and where you need an agent connected to your systems, without picking a side upfront.

The short answer

Should you use Meta Business Agent or an AI agent connected to your systems?

Meta Business Agent is the right fit when your WhatsApp sales can be handled with your catalog, frequently asked questions and general business information: it goes live in minutes and has a free entry tier. An AI agent connected to your systems is the right fit when the answer depends on your data: customer-specific prices, ERP inventory, credit, rule-based quotes and records in Salesforce.

This is not a fight. Meta Business Agent is a good tool and, for a small business with a simple catalog, it is probably the most sensible choice. The useful question is not which one is better, but what the agent needs to know to answer your customer well, and where that data lives.

What it is

What Meta Business Agent is and what it does

Meta Business Agent is the AI agent Meta offers businesses to serve customers on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. It answers questions about the business, recommends products from the catalog, books appointments, qualifies leads and can close sales; when a conversation is beyond it, it hands off to a person with the full history (Meta Newsroom, 2026).

It learns from what the business gives it: profile information, the catalog with its prices, the website, frequently asked questions and documents; in the WhatsApp Business app it also learns from past conversations. For large companies, Meta adds a platform with controls, measurement and connectors to third-party systems, naming Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee among them.

It can be turned on for free, and Meta has announced paid subscription plans for businesses of different sizes. On the official API, its replies are billed at USD 2 per million tokens, about 4 to 5 cents per reply depending on complexity (Meta for Developers, 2026). The rest of the rates are explained in how much the WhatsApp Business API costs.

Where it is enough

When Meta Business Agent is the right choice

For many businesses, Meta's native agent is the right answer, and it is worth saying plainly. If your case looks like these, try it before you evaluate anything else.

  • Simple catalog: one price for every customer, published in the catalog, with no customer-specific price lists or volume discounts.
  • Frequently asked questions: hours, shipping, payment methods and return policies. The answers someone on your team copies and pastes.
  • Appointments and bookings: the agent schedules them without anyone stepping in.
  • Small business: a few people handling customers, everything goes through WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram, and there is no CRM to feed.
  • Starting right away: it is set up in minutes, with no implementation project involved.

A quick test: if a new hire could serve your customers well with just the catalog and a sheet of frequently asked questions, Meta Business Agent can probably do it too. If they would need to log into the ERP and check each customer's account, that is a different conversation.

Where it falls short

When you need an agent connected to your systems

In B2B sales and in mid-size and large companies, the right answer is almost never in the catalog: it is in the ERP and the CRM. The customer does not ask for the list price, they ask for their price, with their discount, and whether there is stock to deliver on Thursday.

Meta's enterprise platform can connect to third-party systems, but the connection to your ERP, your business rules and your Salesforce objects is something someone has to build and maintain. That is where the real work is, and it is what the implementation of a connected agent takes care of. We explain the deeper difference between answering and selling in chatbot or AI agent.

  • Customer-specific prices: different price lists by channel, region or account, and volume discounts that change depending on who is buying.
  • Real-time inventory: what is in the warehouse according to the ERP, not what the catalog showed the last time someone updated it.
  • Credit and account balance: knowing whether the customer has overdue invoices or available credit before taking the order.
  • Rule-based quotes: minimum orders, discounts, payment terms and freight by region, applied the way your team would apply them. We cover it in automated quotes on WhatsApp.
  • Records in Salesforce: every lead, quote and order lands in your CRM, in your objects and under your permissions, with no manual data entry.
  • Handoff with context: the conversation reaches the right sales rep, with what the customer already said and what they were quoted.

Architecture

Can you use both?

Meta's documentation describes how they coexist on the same API number: when Meta Business Agent is active, a third-party app stays on standby and receives a copy of the conversation, and it can take control of a chat and hand it back to Meta's agent when it is done (Meta for Developers, 2026).

Possible does not mean advisable. The underlying question is one of architecture: one number, one agent replying to each customer at any given moment, and clear rules for handing off. If two agents work the same chat without a defined rule, the customer gets crossed answers and nobody knows what was recorded.

Before combining them, decide who answers first, when the conversation passes to the other one and where the record lives. If your sales depend on the ERP and Salesforce, the simplest setup is usually to let the connected agent answer and hand off to a person when needed.

Step by step

How to decide in five steps

The decision comes from your own conversations, not from a product sheet. With these five steps you will know whether Meta's agent is enough or you need a connected one.

1

Gather the real questions

Take your last hundred WhatsApp conversations and sort them: which ones can be answered from the catalog and which ones need data from your system.

2

Find where each piece of data lives

Catalog, ERP, CRM, a spreadsheet or a sales rep's head. Whatever is not in the catalog, an agent cannot know without an integration.

3

Try Meta's agent with your catalog

It is free to turn on and takes minutes. It is the cheapest way to see what share of inquiries it handles on its own.

4

Measure what it hands off

Count how many conversations go to a person and why. If most handoffs are about prices, inventory or credit, the bottleneck is the integration.

5

Compare the total cost

Meta tokens, your team's hours on what gets handed off, and integration. The full breakdown is in [how much an AI agent for WhatsApp costs](/en/sellium/whatsapp-ai-agent-cost).

Caveats: Meta updates its features, rates and billing rules several times a year; check the current ones in its documentation. The cost per reply varies with the complexity of each conversation. Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Meta Business Agent

What sales leadership usually asks when Meta's agent enters the evaluation.

What is Meta Business Agent?

It is Meta's AI agent for businesses: it serves customers on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, answers questions about the business, recommends products from the catalog, books appointments, qualifies leads and hands off to a person when needed. It learns from the business information, catalog, website and frequently asked questions you give it.

Is Meta Business Agent free?

It can be turned on for free, and Meta has announced paid subscription plans for businesses of different sizes. On the official WhatsApp API, its replies are billed per token: USD 2 per million tokens, about 4 to 5 cents per reply depending on complexity (Meta for Developers, 2026).

Does Meta Business Agent connect to my CRM or ERP?

The version you turn on from the app works with the information you load into it. For companies, Meta offers a platform with connectors to third-party systems, naming Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee among them. Connecting your ERP, your price lists and your Salesforce objects is an integration project you will need to take on with your team or a partner.

How much does each Meta Business Agent reply cost?

On the API, Meta bills its replies at USD 2 per million tokens. A typical reply uses between 20,000 and 25,000 tokens, about 4 to 5 cents, and complex conversations cost more (Meta for Developers, 2026). The other rates are covered in how much the WhatsApp Business API costs.

When does a custom AI agent make sense?

When the answer depends on data that is not in the catalog: customer-specific prices, ERP inventory, credit, rule-based quotes or records in Salesforce. Also when your volume makes every handoff to a person expensive. To see what goes into that cost, read how much an AI agent for WhatsApp costs.

Does Sellium replace Meta Business Agent?

Not necessarily. They solve different problems: Meta Business Agent works very well for simple catalogs and frequently asked questions; Sellium is built to sell with your data, connected to Salesforce and the ERP. If you already use Meta's agent, the key is to define who answers what on your number. To find out what Sellium would cost in your case, request a quote.
