Click-to-WhatsApp definition

Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) is a type of ad whose click opens a WhatsApp conversation with the company instead of a landing page. The user sees the ad on Instagram, Facebook, the Meta feed or a button on a website, taps "Send message" and lands in the chat with a prefilled message, ready to talk to a rep or a bot.

The underlying idea is to change where the conversion happens: instead of asking the prospect to fill out a form that nobody may ever answer, you take them to the app they already have open and use every day. This reduces friction and captures intent at the exact moment it is highest. In the funnel, the message the user sends from the ad opens the 24-hour window, during which the company can reply with free-form text without needing a WhatsApp message template (HSM); and if it replies within that window, Meta opens a free entry point window of up to 7 days in which it does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages (Meta, 2026).

As a conversational acquisition tactic, Click-to-WhatsApp is part of what Revio orchestrates when it connects media spend with automated follow-up of every conversation it generates.

How it works, step by step

The typical journey of a Click-to-WhatsApp ad has four moments. First, the company creates the campaign in Meta Ads Manager (or sets up the button on Google and on its website) and defines the prefilled welcome message, the text that appears already typed in the chat before the user sends anything. Second, the person sees the ad and taps the message button. Third, WhatsApp opens with the conversation already started, identifying which ad it came from (the attribution data travels with the click). Fourth, on the other side, a human rep, a chatbot or an AI agent replies, qualifies the interest and moves the conversation forward.

A key technical detail: the message that arrives from the ad opens the 24-hour window, the period in which the company can reply with free-form messages and no template cost. If the conversation cools off and has to be picked up again after those 24 hours, an approved WhatsApp message template (HSM) is required. If the company replied within those first 24 hours, Meta also opens a free entry point window that can last up to 7 days: while it is open, Meta does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages, templates included. That is why the speed of the first reply is decisive in this format.

Why it matters for B2B and consumer businesses

Click-to-WhatsApp solves two old problems of digital lead capture. One is the form abandonment rate: many prospects click an ad, see a landing page and leave without sharing their details. The other is the dead time between the lead and the first contact, where a good part of the intent evaporates. By landing directly in a chat, the business captures the conversation while it is hot and can reply in seconds.

In Argentina and the rest of the region this carries extra weight because WhatsApp is the default communication channel. A car dealership in Córdoba, a consumer goods distributor in Rosario or a services SMB in Buenos Aires usually closes far more deals by chat than by email. The format builds on a habit that already exists instead of fighting it.

A concrete example

A beverage wholesaler launches a seasonal promotion and runs a Click-to-WhatsApp ad on Instagram. The prefilled message says "Hi, I want the wholesale price for the summer promo." When a convenience store owner taps the button, a bot asks for their area and volume, sends the price list and, if the order exceeds a certain amount, hands the chat over to a human sales rep (human handoff). Every conversation is attributed to that campaign, so marketing can measure the cost per conversation opened and per sale closed, not just the cost per click.

Common mistakes

  • Having nobody on the other side. If the first reply takes hours, you lose the format's advantage and burn the ad spend.
  • A generic welcome message. A "Hi, how can I help you?" performs much worse than a text that already names the product or the promotion in the ad.
  • Ignoring opt-in. To send proactive messages later, you need explicit consent (opt-in); the ad click opens the window, but it is not the same as permission for ongoing marketing.
  • Not measuring beyond the click. CPC on its own is misleading: what matters is the cost per qualified conversation and per sale.

Neither is better in the abstract: the landing page still works for mass capture campaigns that are then nurtured with lead nurturing, while Click-to-WhatsApp shines when the business is ready to talk and close on the spot.

FAQs about Click-to-WhatsApp

What is Click-to-WhatsApp?

Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) is an ad format whose click, instead of opening a landing page, opens a WhatsApp chat with the company directly. The user sees the ad on Instagram, Facebook or a website button, taps "Send message" and lands in a conversation with a prefilled message, ready to talk to a rep or a bot. It turns an ad impression into a one-to-one conversation.

How is a Click-to-WhatsApp ad different from a landing page?

The difference lies in where the click goes and in the friction. A landing page with a form takes the user to a web page where they have to fill out several fields, and the contact is left cold to be called or emailed later. Click-to-WhatsApp leads to a chat that opens instantly: the conversation is two-way, friction is minimal and an immediate reply is expected. The landing page works better for mass capture that is nurtured later; Click-to-WhatsApp, for talking and closing on the spot.

How much does it cost to send messages after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad?

The message the user sends from the ad opens the 24-hour window, during which the company can reply with free-form text; after that period, picking the conversation back up requires an approved WhatsApp message template (HSM). The cost depends on another window: if the company replies within those 24 hours, Meta opens a free entry point window that can last up to 7 days, in which it does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages, templates included (Meta, 2026). Outside that window, each template is charged per message based on its category and the country. That is why it pays to reply fast and make the most of the free window.

Do I need the user's opt-in if they came from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad?

The ad click starts the conversation and opens the 24-hour window to reply, but it is not the same as permission for ongoing marketing. To send them proactive messages in the future, such as promotions or reminders outside that window, you need their opt-in, that is, their explicit consent. It is best to ask for it clearly during the first conversation.

On which platforms can you create Click-to-WhatsApp ads?

The most common format is Meta ads, which appear on Facebook and Instagram and take users to the WhatsApp chat with a message button. You can also drive clicks to WhatsApp from Google through message assets, from floating buttons on a website and from wa.me links shared on any channel. In every case, the conversation starts with a prefilled message that can be customized for each campaign.
